Thonglor is formerly a residential area for affluent families in the Eastern End of the Bangkok downtown. The proximity and the ease of access from Thonglor to Bangkok business districts, shopping districts, and the express way made Thonglor an area of choice for many.
Today, Thonglor is the meeting ground for Bangkok’s affluent young professionals. Both young urban Thais and expatriates enjoy the fascinating line-up of outdoor boutique malls and concept restaurants and bars. What makes Thonglor unique is that the place where the real action takes place is not immediately next to the BTS station but rather right in the middle of the Soi along with the sub-Sois branching out from Sukhumvit Soi 55 itself.
For the past five years, Thonglor has seen a transformation from being relatively low-rise residential to high-rise. Developers see Thonglor as an area of choice due to the convenient access from a number of major streets and neighbouring Sois such as Sukhumvit Road, Petchaburi Road, Soi Phrom Pong and Soi Ekkamai. In addition to this, Thonglor has never really seen severe traffic jams as the street does not have direct access to four way intersections from both ends, unlike Soi Ekkamai. Despite this the vast network of smaller Sois provides Thonglor residents shortcuts to the expressways.
Thonglor is among the most sought after areas for Bangkok expatriates when it comes to finding a place to call home. It is popular among the families of the Japanese expatriates and still remains attractive for young European professionals. The main area of concerns now for the latter market is the rental fee which has always been improving thus pushing this market out to Ekkamai, Phrakanong and Onnut areas.
